Crime against women
Cases registered under the heads NCRB groups as crimes against women, per lakh of the female population. The rate is the headline here rather than the absolute count, which rises with population regardless of anything else. Read it knowing what it measures: cases *reported to police*. A rise can mean more crime, or more willingness to report it, or both — and the two are not separable from this series alone. The 2020 fall coincides with lockdown, when reporting itself was obstructed.

4,45,256 cases — about 51 FIRs an hour. Cruelty by a husband or his relatives is 31.4% of the total, kidnapping and abduction 19.2%, assault with intent to outrage modesty 18.7%, rape 7.1%. Delhi's rate was 144.4, more than double the national figure.
